A Cultural Affair; Most Marvelously Mint

It's been awhile since I've had the opportunity or inclination to get dressed up (which is rare for me) but it's just been too darn hot to preen. After having a particlarly low day though I decided to pull myself out of the slump the best way I knew how; by wearing a voluminous tutu in my favourite shade and heading to Fringe World to see beautiful men with amazing bodies covered in glitter cavort and perform aerial circus feats whilst semi/fully naked with strategically placed silver tassles, as directed my a transvestitte emcee. What? How do you get your kicks?

For the record, the fringe show I saw at the beautiful Spiegeltent was Briefs - Burlesque with Balls. Australia's (and possibly the World's) best all male burlesque revue. So good that their star performer has recently been crowned Burlesque King of the World and will accompany Dita Von Teese on her next tour. But I digress. This blog is about fashion, not naked men (hmm, new blog idea *epiphany*). BUT check them out should you get the chance - more here: http://www.facebook.com/briefsallmalecircuscabaret?sk=wall

So, back to the task at hand. What does one wear to a Fringe event at the beautiful Spiegeltent? With it's stained glass windows, beautiful wooden booths and decadent old time Carnivale atmosphere, you can put a little extra effort into your Spiegel-attire.

I always prefer to be over dressed than underdressed and while meeting some friends there, I considered the venue to be my date - I had to dress to match her finery. But it was still 100 degrees.

One of the colours I adore presently is mint green. It looks like candy and feels super feminine, whilst also being a shade of my favourite; blue based greens. Also known as 'sea foam' as the Nom du jour, it is an incredibly pretty colour that makes one think of vintage garden parties, but it's also really wearable and versatile (and can rage from electric mint, so a subtle pastel shade). I'll be putting together and posting a Mint story board soon.

I also have an epic lady crush on ballet skirts/tutus. Wheels & Dollbaby have launched a beautiful range of them recently, but with a $455.00 (AUD) price tag they're a bit of a luxury. They are stunning though and I think, surprisingly versatile given the right styling. I will be styling a shoot with these type of skirts as a main feature very soon.

These are beautiful but presently out of my price range, and so I picked up my little beauty for a sneaky $30.00 from the interwebs - and in my favourite shade of mint no less. So without further ado, here's my outfit choice for Fringe.

A simple white camisole with some ebroidery (mine is borrowed from my beloved housemate T's wardobe), a mint tulle ballet skirt and my favourite matching minty-teal faux suede t-bar heels from my own company The Powder Room (I may or may not have these heels in black, pink and teal).

I'm in the process (at least until I get bored of it) of ombre-fying my hair so I straightened my two-toned locks (although my faded automatic turquoise patch actually went quite nicely with my colour choice). I kept makeup simple, as it was too bloody hot for much but I did experiment with the current trend for orange based matte lips - I used my new Revlon Strawberry Suede ultra matte lipstick.

And this was the finished result (excuse the webcam photos in awkward positions - my camera flash is broken) - all minted up and ready to see delicious sparkly men perform for my entertainment in a 1920s Spiegeltent. Whilst wearing a tutu and sipping gin. If that's not a pick-me-up, I don't know what is.

Keep a look out for a Minty-Seafoam goodness storyboard coming up soon! x

Fashionably Narcissistic

Forgive me interwebs for I have sinned, it has been one month since my last blog entry...

I am working on a blog post that I've wanted to write for some time but it's not quite done percolating just yet. So in this time of blog-void I shall turn to that which never fails in the great wide world wide web. Narcissism. Seeing as blogs are all about the thoughts and opinions of the blogger, I suppose it's time to play "Getting to Know You" - or at least, my personal fashion.

So what follows are some snippets of outfits I have styled for myself, ON myself. My camera is currently on a hiatus an so I am relying on my iphone (and a heinously dirty mirror) to capture some of these looks. Terribly sorry for the lack of quality. I'll include some pretty sourced pictures of my finds and current favourite trends too, so that you don't go cross-eyed.

Things about my fashion, Lesson one - I'm stockings/tights/sock obsessed -

And generally the crazier/more abstract the better.

I am particularly loving the knee-high socks OVER stockings thing at the moment. Australian winter is pretty much the perfect climate for it too.

My new favourite things in life (only a mild exaggeration) are my white polka dot tights. I know have white and black, but am yet to access grey.

Lesson 2 - I'm a Mad Hatter

Yes I'm also obsessed with hats. This is for several reasons that include their being awesome, my having a tiny head and unruly hair and the fact that now I'm blonde again, regrowth maintenance is a pain in the arse, happily (albeit temporarily) solved by hats!

As above; I love berets and below; floppy brim hats (and the stocking trend continues).

Must find beret in this colour!

Adore this look by Versace. The drama of the cut-away little
black dress with the nonchalance of the beret? Awesome

Lesson Three - Red Red Wine Lips

I love the blood red lips look, but have never thought myself capable of pulling it off. I despise (well maybe just envy) people who can just slick it on and look amazing. I however, have to find the PERFECT red before it looks ok, and anything orange based looks terrible on me. Well ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to say that after many years of fruitless searching; I've found it. Mac Ruby-Woo is the perfect red lipstick (for me at least). Blue based but not too pink, with a totally matte finish. Perfection.

Lesson Four: My Perfect Silhouette

This lesson I have actually just learned myself while writing this post. I've sensed a theme emerging in my favourite outfits. Loose fitting top, tight short skirt, legs-legs-legs and then boots. I think this has something to do with the fact that due to my, erm, assets up top - fitted shirts never sit the way I want them to. I either look deceptively larger or somewhat tarty. I guess we all emphasise what we most like about ourselves - and I like my legs (and hate my stomach). What do you like the most about yourself?
I think this is why I'm presently on the cape/poncho/kimono/chiffon top loving trend. As with this poncho above, that I think is beautiful (also as I'm rather partial to Autumn colours like brown).

To leave you with a final image.... I'm pretty much in love with the outfit above. I'm not sure I could pull it off, and the shoes aren't quite me but I did recently purchase a giant black hairbow from Dangerfield. I'd also need to (finally) learn how to go about the whole GHD curls thing (but they're STRAIGHTeners, how do they curl!?). Well that concludes this outing in narcissism. Now if you don't mind, I'm off to purchase a red sequin mini skirt ... and possibly a matching beret.
